ONE80 FIN SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY

The ONE80 Fin System has fin plugs that are mounted with zero “toe-in”. Most surfboards have side fins that point inward towards the nose of the board; however, ONE80 Fins are mounted parallel to the stringer. You decide how much “toe-in” the board will have during a turn by adjusting the buttons on the left and right side of the fin plug.

ONE80 Fins are spring-loaded, so when water is forced against them, they will respond to your desired setting. You have three choices of pivot range–0, 6, or 12 degrees. When you are not performing a turn, the fins rest in the base position (zero degree of toe-in), parallel to the stringer. So, the drag that normally occurs from the toe-in of the side fins does not occur. The result is it’s easier to paddle out and catch waves. It’s also faster down the line with smoother turning transitions.

The ONE80 Fin System is dynamic and mimics nature. It’s as if each fin has a little muscle, due to the fact that it’s spring-loaded. Energy from your legs and feet is transferred into these little muscles during a turn, then released coming out of the turn. The fins pivot, then un-pivot, mimicking what happens when fish create thrust and directional movements with their fins. The fins on your board can now work for you in this way.

ABOUT ONE80 SURFBOARDS

ONE80 Surfboards currently offers 8 surfboard models to choose from and each model comes in 3 size variations. By installing the ONE80 Fin System exclusively into ONE80 Surfboards, the production process is controlled on site, thus allowing for immediate R&D intervention. This approach develops a standard for making this fin system available, in the future, for all surfboard manufacturers. ONE80 Fins do everything standard fins do, with an innovative exception–the ONE80 Fin System can pivot if desired. No other fin system in the world can do this.

Surfboard fins and fin systems have basically stayed the same for more than eighty years. Ever since Tom Blake installed the first fin on a surfboard in 1935, surfboards in the marketplace have had fixed fins. Since then, fin evolution has largely been contained to changing size, shape, number, and materials. However, the concept of fin movement, outside of fin flexibility, is an outlier–almost a heretic in the surf world.

Traditional surfboards have side fins pre-set with a specific degree of “toe-in”. This sets up an equilibrium of drag between the two side fins, that fight for dominance, while moving straight ahead. As soon as a rider initiates a turn, the inside fin then takes control. The more “toe-in” a board has,the tighter the turning radius which is advantageous in small surf. By contrast, less “toe-in” means a larger turning radius and is best suited for big wave boards. Uniquely, the ONE80 Fin Systems turns a single surfboard into a quiver of surfboards by controlling the boards “toe-in”.
